Tooth Preservation - Prevention & Restoration

For healthy teeth

ooth-preserving measures stand for healthy teeth, for a better quality of life. Our goal is to preserve your own tooth with its natural root. We believe that your own tooth is the better implant.

Tooth preservation includes all measures to maintain the tooth in its form and function.

Tooth-preserving measures are all measures that are preventive or conservative in order to maintain the function and shape of the teeth. Acids, abrasion, plaque, caries and / or periodontitis are the cause of diseases or damage to the tooth structure.

Keeping teeth healthy through prevention

Prevention is, of course, the best way to keep teeth healthy in form and function. You yourself can make the biggest contribution to this. Regular and thorough oral hygiene and a healthy diet are the most important pillars for maintaining dental health.

Further measures for early detection are preventive examinations in the dental practice. Preventive examinations can prevent diseases or detect them at an early stage. Damage or disease caused by caries or gum disease can be rehabilitated, reduced or stopped.

When we remove tartar or clean your teeth, we specifically clean the areas that are difficult or impossible for you to reach at home. This is perfect dental care in teamwork. You yourself can optimally maintain the preventive effect through subsequent intensive daily dental cleaning.

Tooth preservation through restoration

A tooth restoration is always necessary when defects in the crown area of the tooth need to be repaired. This is the only way to prevent the progression of tooth damage and to reconstruct the function of the tooth.

Defects in the crown area can be caused by:

  • Caries (in the fissures, interdental spaces, tooth neck, …)
  • Periodontitis (gum disease)
  • Erosions (loss of enamel due to acids, medication, …)
  • Tooth wear (due to pressing, grinding, …)
  • Lost dental restorations (fillings, inlays, posts and crowns)

In restorative tooth preservation, there are many possibilities in modern dentistry to restore the defects in the dental crown area in form and function. Our goal is always minimally invasive dental treatment to leave the healthy tooth substance in place. This way, the healthy tooth substance can continue to be used to stabilise the tooth.

Tooth preservation through minimally invasive therapy – kinetic cavity preparation

Kinetic preparation is an alternative to caries removal that is gentle on the tooth substance. The extraordinary advantage of kinetic preparation is the removal of caries even through the smallest of openings. This means that no unnecessary substance has to be sacrificed, which would have stood in the way of the “rumbling drill”.

Kinetic cavity preparation can often replace the drill and thus save tooth substance. It is used for small to medium caries. This treatment method is carried out with a powder jet device. In terms of the way it works, it is a sandblasting method. The device is operated with compressed air. The aluminium oxide particles accelerated with this, together with compressed air and water, remove only the soft tooth defects at the carious site through the impact.

The advantage of kinetic preparation is not only the removal of the carious areas, which is basically gentle on the tooth substance. Patients also find this method very pleasant.

With kinetic preparation in combination with the flow materials, we can now repair and fill defects without damaging the substance, where this was not possible before. For example, at the margins of fillings, inlays or crowns, as well as in tooth regions that are difficult to access due to the tooth anatomy.

Measures to preserve teeth

Treatment spectrum in dental restoration

Advanced dental technology has developed materials that offer high-quality aesthetics, stability and durability. This makes it possible to eliminate dental defects without damaging the tooth substance.

Which treatment is ultimately carried out always depends on the size of the tooth defect. In terms of tooth preservation, healthy, stable tooth substance is of course also preserved here.

  • Fillings for smaller defects

The high-quality filling materials allow a minimally invasive therapy. Specially developed adhesives are applied to the tooth substance. This allows the filling material to adhere to the tooth surface without the need for time-consuming grinding of the cavity into shape.

  • Inlays

Inlays are an alternative to fillings. Inlays are often a good alternative for large fillings, as they offer more stability for heavy chewing loads in the posterior region.

  • Crowns for larger defects

For larger defects, a crown is the last option to restore the function of the tooth. Depending on the size of the defect, partial crowns or full crowns are available.

  • Pin abutments for deep defects

Pin abutments are necessary when the tooth defects have progressed so far/deep that the natural tooth crown is largely or completely missing. With the help of pins, a durable connection between the root and the tooth crown can be constructed. Here, too, there are different variants depending on the size of the defect.

    • Parapulpal posts – to stabilise the filling
    • Root pins – for anchoring between the root and the tooth crown

Tooth preservation through root canal treatment

What used to be a frequent reason for extracting a tooth can be avoided with modern instruments and equipment in endodontology.

The advantage of a successful root canal treatment is that you can keep your own tooth. For dental prosthetic restorations, a root-treated tooth can also serve as a natural abutment.

An own (also root-treated) tooth is the better implant.

The aim of a root canal treatment is to preserve the tooth permanently. For this purpose, the diseased pulp tissue including all germs and necrotic material is completely removed from the root canals. The root canals are then prepared evenly and up to the root tip.

This allows the structure around the root tip to be preserved by healing the inflammation. A bacteria-proof, permanent closure of the root canals with biocompatible materials prevents possible reinfection.

Tooth preservation through periodontitis therapy

Periodontitis is the inflammation of the tissue around the root of the tooth, combined with bone loss. The result is progressive recession of the gums and loosening of the teeth. Without treatment, periodontitis inevitably leads to tooth loss.

Periodontitis can be stopped! The healing of the periodontium consists of repairing the tissue damage that has occurred. Restoration or reconstruction of the gums that have already disappeared can only be achieved to a limited extent.

In modern dentistry, periodontal treatment is carried out using the most minimally invasive method possible to preserve the substance of the gums and bone tissue. The treatment consists of removing all pathogenic plaque and already necrotised tissue so that the tissue of the periodontium can strengthen and reattach to the tooth. This allows you to bite powerfully again.
